In the early 1900s, the missionaries Alice Seeley Harris and her husband, Reverend John Harris, produced what was probably the first photographic campaign in support of human rights.
Featring a major essay by Sharon Sliwinski The Kodak on the Congo: The Childhood of Human Rights. Sliwinski discusses the history of atrocities in the Congo Free State in the late 19th century under the reign of King Leopold II of Belgium. The newspaper also reproduces a new commission by Democratic Republic of Congo artist Sammy Baloji.
